Expertise
The Risk Monitor Group is an independent, multi-disciplinary but highly focused health and HIV/AIDS risk management company. It offers its clients a unique combination of clinical, managed care, health economics, actuarial, risk management and computer programming skills and experience.

The Risk Monitor Group’s core competency lies in the development, implementation and support of computer-based actuarial risk management models that cost-effectively model and monitor complex risk environments.

History
During 2001 Professor George Marx, Dr Izak Fourie, Dr Gil Mahlati and Dr Tienie Stander joined forces, and with the assistance of the Channel Group, established The Health Monitor Company. The Health Monitor Company commenced operations on 1 August 2001 with an impressive list of blue chip clients.

Gradually, and on demand, the Health Monitor Company extended its operations to include specialised risk management services in a wider range of industries.

On 22 November 2002 the company restructured to form The Risk Monitor Group, with the Health Monitor Company as one of its subsidiaries.

Ownership
Fifty nine percent of The Risk Monitor Group is owned by its executive directors and staff, and the rest by Channel Limited, a PSG Group subsidiary.

    The last twelve years of Dr Fourie’s career included being the medical advisor for the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. His expertise focuses around epidemiological studies, actuarial prevalence projections of HIV/AIDS, the pro-active restructuring of major industry retirement funds and their associated death and disability benefits. Dr Fourie completed the first World Health Organisation–sponsored International Course on Planning and Managing STD/AIDS Control Activities in Developing Countries (Antwerp, Belgium). He was a Co-Founder (with the former and current Ministers of Health and Judge Edwin Cameron) and National Coordinating Committee member of NACOSA (National AIDS Convention of South Africa). NACOSA was an initiative of all the major political parties, organized business and labour, church and civic organisations aimed at curbing and managing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa.

    During 1993 he presented his research paper at the 7th Annual AIDS in Africa Congress in Morocco. Dr Fourie was an extra-ordinary Professor at the Department of Actuarial and Insurance Science of the University of Pretoria, served as the Chairperson of the Business South Africa Task Group on AIDS, and initiated, organised and contributed to a World Bank/World Health Organisation sponsored Seminar on HIV/AIDS in the Mining Industries of the Southern African Region (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe). In 1997 Dr Fourie started a healthcare and HIV/AIDS consulting company which provided the base for the establishment of the Health Monitor Company.

    Dr Stander's expertise is supported by his previous positions as medical officer, hospital manager, and principal officer to medical schemes. He later founded a company, Tri-Health (Pty) Ltd, which merged to formed the current Health Monitor Group. Tri-Health specialised in setting up provider networks and streamlining systems between medical schemes and their providers to be profitable and cost effective for the parties involved. These services today provide the ground rules for the future of the healthcare industry in South Africa.

    After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1999 Matthew started his career at Alexander Forbes Financial Services where he initially worked in the pension funds’ actuarial department and later joined the pension fund consulting department.  In 2005 Matthew joined the Health Monitor Company as an actuarial consultant in the HIV/AIDS practice.

    Elna Croeser excelled in her actuarial studies and moved on to gain extensive experience at companies such as Sanlam, Malan & Partners, Liberty Life, Ginsburg Malan & partners, Southern Africa Actuarial Consultants, Atomic Energy Corporation, and PSG. The respect she gained in the industry guided her to spend time as an independent consulting actuary, before teaming up with the Risk Monitor Group in 2002.

    Henri Gonin qualified as actuary in 2002. He started his career with Momentum Life, where he spent most of his time in product development. Henri joined the Risk Monitor Group in October 2002, and has delivered invaluable inputs in the development, fine-tuning and success of the Health Monitor computer model.

  • Christoff Raath

    Christoff started his career as a lecturer in actuarial mathematics at the University of Pretoria. During this period he also worked for Professor George Marx in his private practice. Christoff was one of the first employees to join the Health Monitor Company in August 2001, with George Marx. While he played an integral role in its development, Christoff heads the day-to-day running of the Health Monitor computer model.

  • Andre Bellingan

    André Bellingan excelled in his studies and attained cum laude for both his B.Sc Actuarial Science and B.Sc Hons in Statistics.  He started his career at PSG Anchor Life in the product development department before moving to a career in consulting.  He is responsible for bringing the HIV/AIDS Modelling software to life, which included the research, actuarial work, system design, testing and implementation.  He uses this sofware, along with his knowledge and experience of HIV/AIDS to consult to a variety of clients on the financial and demographic implications of HIV/AIDS.

  • Khalid Mahomed launched his career with the Health Monitor Company after studying at the University of Pretoria under Professor George Marx. He manages the area of post-retirement liability modeling and is responsible for developing the model for this.

    Ancley honed his craft while in the employ of the Financial Services Board (FSB) as a Technical Actuarial Analyst. He is a student of the Institute of Actuaries and ASSA and is currently completing his honours. Ancley is part of the Health Monitor computer model team.
